Moss backs regional LAS Awards

ONE of Australia’s most successful business leaders has backed a new regional awards program that recognises success and leadership in Greater Western Sydney (GWS).

Bill Moss AM will chair the judging for the 2013 GWS Leadership and Success Awards (LAS Awards) which were launched late in 2012.

Bill grew up in Merrylands and went on to build a global property business as a senior executive with Macquarie Bank.

The GWS LAS Awards are the only regional awards that recognise the leaders and success builders in one of Australia’s fastest growing and most dynamic regions – Greater Western Sydney.

GWS is a powerhouse of economic progress and cultural diversity. It generates almost $90 billion annually in gross regional product (GRP) which is about a third of the entire metropolitan area’s GRP.

The region is home to almost two million people and more than 150,000 businesses including newly created national AFL and soccer teams and 14 local government areas.

With unprecedented development across property, sport, events, transport, professional services and entertainment the region is primed for an awards program that discovers and recognises the leaders and success builders that have shaped its future.

Western Sydney Business Access (WSBA) and the WaterView in Bicentennial Park are major sponsors of the LAS Awards.

LAS Awards Director, Natalie Moss said the LAS Awards are not only about being the best. They are about achievement.

“The LAS Awards will reflect the evolving priorities and standards of the region characterised by a new generation of business and cultural leaders and innovative models of success and opportunity,” Natalie said.

Bill said he was inspired to become involved in the awards because it gave him the opportunity to contribute back to western Sydney.

“My inspiration comes from the opportunity to contribute back into Western Sydney, acknowledge people who are trying to make a difference in businesses, and who are trying to be successful,” Bill said.

“I believe that we should acknowledge those that strive to be the best in their field. I have always held the view that success breeds success. Success is something that you should be proud of and aspire to in society, and accordingly that is why I am inspired to be involved.

He said the elements of success in GWS differ from other regions.

“Western Sydney is an environment where people are not given success automatically. People generally from Western Sydney are not born into wealth or fortune, it is an area where people that do succeed have to succeed on their own ability,” he said.

“There is no shortcut in Western Sydney to success - it is all about hard work, dedication, and having the right work ethic. These are the ingredients that are successful for succeeding internationally.

“A successful business I think is one that has; a very sound strategy, an ability for the business to understand the global picture, changing socio-economical trends, corporate governance, can provide a balance for its employees between lifestyle and success, and that can provide opportunities for minority groups regardless of race, religion or disabilities.

“It's an ability to understand your market today about how it is going to be tomorrow - if you cannot understand tomorrow’s market you will be in a mess.

Bill said leaders by their actions define and shape the impressions of those around them.

“Leaders have an opinion and a solution of what’s wrong with society and have an opinion that is able to educate others to their solutions.

“I would hope launching these regional awards encourages confidence, success and acknowledgement amongst peers. Success in any business should be applauded and encouraged, those that can lead and influence others to be successful should be seen as the role models of our society.

“Western Sydney needs heroes, it is time we applaud the heroes of Western Sydney that make a difference and create a better quality of life not only for themselves but also those around them.”
