Liverpool lobbies for share of growth

LIVERPOOL is taking steps to lobby the government for a share in the expected growth of $9 million to Western Sydney economy from the Badgerys Creek Airport.

Council will establish the Badgerys Creek Airport Taskforce, supported by a new staff member and administrative unit.

The unit, expected to cost $100,000 to establish, will monitor the airport project.

“The government announced $3 billion in infrastructure so we need to come up with informed decisions and requests,” said Mayor, Ned Mannoun, who will chair the taskforce.
Clr Nannoun has sought to have the airport’s planning staff located in Liverpool.

The opportunities for Liverpool as the gateway to the south west and the home of Sydney’s second airport were enormous but required investment to fully harness the economic potential, council said.

The airport represented both opportunity and challenge for council.

“It is important to ensure that appropriate planning, advocacy and resourcing are in place in order to maximise the potential benefits for the Liverpool community while avoiding risks and minimising impacts,” council said.

“As the regional city for Sydney’s fastest growing region – South West Sydney – and now with Sydney’s second airport to be developed within the local area, Liverpool is positioned to become an economic powerhouse, but sound planning and investment are essential to ensure Liverpool’s potential is realised.

“Council needs to be ready to harness the opportunities and neutralise the challenges that will flow from the airport decision.”

An airport could potentially bring more than 20,000 jobs to Liverpool.
