REVITALISATION OF RIVERSTONE

Council calls for ideas for renewal

THE process to revitalise Riverstone Town Centre is officially underway – with Council seeking to enlist the best people to develop and draft the blueprint.

Blacktown City Council has called for expressions of interest from qualified and experienced professionals to prepare an Urban Renewal Masterplan for the Riverstone Town Centre.

A Masterplan will be developed to guide the future growth and development of the Riverstone Town Centre. Riverstone Town Centre lies at the heart of a major growth area.

“The future of Riverstone needs to be underpinned by community facilities and services, and recreation opportunities,” Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali said.

“We want the Town Centre to be a safe, high quality public domain that provides a variety of retail, community and business services for the local community”, said Mayor Bali.

It is expected that the Riverstone area may be home to close to 30,000 new residents over the next 20 to 30 years.

To accommodate this population growth, the Riverstone Town Centre will need to grow to service the needs of the people who live in, work in, and visit, the local area.

“The vibrancy of the Riverstone Town Centre will be reinforced by opportunities for alfresco dining, cafes and restaurants, supported by low rise mixed use residential development that is compatible with the scale and form of the surrounding area.

“I want the community to know that Riverstone’s heritage characteristics will be recognised and retained, and the centre will be well connected to and integrated with the surrounding area,” Mayor Bali said.

The local streets will be pedestrian oriented, with safe and easy pedestrian access to and through the centre and railway station.

The public domain will be characterised by consistent paving, street furniture, lighting and landscaping.  Landscaping will include tree planting along streets and open space areas.

“Council believes that it is important for the community to have a substantial input into the Masterplan early and throughout the whole the process.”

“The first stage of community consultation will occur mid-year,” Mayor Bali said.
