HOME OF ROWING

Vistors flock to Penrith for oarsome time

IT’S easy to see why Penrith is known as the home of rowing.

So far this year more than 55,000 competitors and spectators have visited the city to attend rowing events held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Since the 2015 rowing season started in February there has been five rowing events held in Penrith; the Rowing NSW State Championship, the annual NSW Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Head of the River events and the Greater Public School Regatta.

Just last month Penrith hosted Australia’s largest rowing event, the Sydney International Rowing Regatta.

This week-long event attracted nearly 33,000 visitors either competing in or watching the Australian Open Rowing Championships, Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships and the King’s and Queen’s Cup Interstate Regatta.

This steady stream of visitors from the Australian and International rowing community is set to continue over the next few years, with the NSW State Government announcingPenrith will continue to host the Sydney International Rowing Regatta for the next three years

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM welcomed this news and said it was wonderful that Penrith is now the destination of choice for rowing events.

“We are very pleased to see Penrith has become a popular choice for local and international rowing events. Not only do these events put Penrith is the spotlight, they provide an important boost to the local economy,” Cr Fowler said.

Upcoming rowing events in Penrith:

•         Rowing NSW State Masters Championships 16-17 May.
•         Australian Masters Championships 28-31 May.
•         Trans-Tasman Regatta 30 June – 5 July.
