Increase in local stealing prompts action

NORTH Sydney Council has partnered with NSW Police and the NSW Department of Justice to implement the Be Safe Not Sorry crime prevention initiative to help make North Sydney a safer place.

The campaign is a response to a significant increase in stealing from dwellings and identity theft including stealing from mailboxes in the local area.

The North Sydney local government area has the fifth highest rate of steal from dwelling incidents in the Sydney Metropolitan area, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

In a two-year period from October 2012, North Sydney experienced a 66 per cent increase in the incidence of steal from dwelling.

Police from the Harbourside Local Area Command are offering a free residential security audit of homes to improve home security and North Sydney Council will offer up to a $200 subsidy if you carry out recommended work to deter theft.

Follow this three step plan to help protect your home and belongings from theft.

1. Read information in the related documents below about how to protect your identity from theft and to protect your home and property from criminals.
2. Assess your risks and take preventative steps.The Harbourside Local Area Command offers a free safety audit of your home and will assess ways to improve your safety.
3. Undertake measures, keep your receipts and apply for a subsidy from North Sydney Council for your works.

1. For a free safety audit phone Crime Prevention Officer North Sydney Police on 9956 3199.
2. To report suspicious behaviour, identity theft or crime phone NSW Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Don't forget to report lost or stolen documents to the organisations that issued them.
3. To apply for a subsidy from North Sydney Council call Eric Poulos, Social Planner on 9936 8193. You must be a resident of the North Sydney Local Government Area.
