PEAT ISLAND DEVELOPMENT ON HOLD

THE major redevelopment of Peat Island has been put on hold as the public review period is extended by at least three months.

At a recent meeting, Central Coast Council made some significant changes to the island’s proposed layout and extended the review period.

Residential dwellings have been reduced from around 500 and will now number 268 homes. Building heights have been reduced from 17m to 12m.

The amount of land dedicated to National Parks has been increased from 2.6ha to 11.3ha. Public access land has also been increased, up from 2ha to 10 ha.

The island development will become a Gateway to the Coast, replacing the former Peat island facility for severely disabled clients in state care. The facility was moved to a new site south of Wyong Hospital several years ago.

The redevelopment will provide significant opportunities for coast businesses involved in the building trade.

The new proposal will be sent to the Department of Planning for consideration and will be eventually voted on by the newly elected council.
