Cherry King crowned for third time

THE 33rd Sydney Cherry Auction held on October 31 at Sydney Markets Flemington raised more than $30,000 for the Sydney Markets Foundation and the Save Our Sons charity.

The winning bidders of the first box of cherries of the season were Lui and Ross Cicco, from Pony Express with a bid of $30,000. The auction was also attended by a number of celebrities including Queensland rugby league coach, Mal Meninga and player, Greg Inglis.

Lui was crowned the 2012 Cherry King donning the crown and robes for a third time. As the Cherry King, Lui’s image will greet all visitors to Sydney Markets over the next few weeks with his face adorning the large billboard on the entry at Austin Avenue.

“Sydney Markets would like to thank all the businesses and celebrities who donated their time and efforts today to make the event such a success,” said CEO of Sydney Markets, Brad Latham.

The Sydney Markets Foundation Was set up in 2010 to ensure the generosity of the Sydney Markets Community reached people and communities in need. Save Our Sons is committed to finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

About 2.5 million tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables is sold through Sydney Markets valued at more than $3billion. Over the weekend Sydney Markets become Paddys Markets attracting almost 140,000 customers per week.
