NEW PROTEIN BARS FOR DOGS

Coast firm targets growing pet population
DALLAS SHERRINGHAM
AUSTRALIA has more than twice as many pets as adult Australians which makes pet food a very profitable industry indeed.
Central Coast company Green Blue Health based at Erina has built a business on developing sustainable nutritional products for the wellbeing of animals, including our much-loved pets.

The company’s latest innovation is a range of protein bars for dogs. The bars are purposefully created with ingredients rich in protein and Omega Three, including herring fish and seasonal fruits and vegetables, to meet the demand for sustainable and innovative pet products.

Australia's pet population well outweighs the human population with more than 30 million pets. It is estimated that 69% of Aussie households own a pet. More than a million dogs have been welcomed into homes since 2019, as reported by Animal Medicines Australia.

Green Blue Health has recently collaborated with forward-thinking Australian pet companies like Nova Concepts. They have launched the new protein bar under their Bow Wow brand of natural pet treats.

Nova Concepts General Manager Anthony Landolfi welcomed the partnership with Green Blue Health. "This has been a two-year project to create the perfect protein boost bar for pets that meets all of our requirements. Including all healthy ingredients, rich in protein and Omega Three, grain-free, GMO-free, with no added colors or flavors," he said.

The protein bar formulation is the creation of Karlie Wilson, Food Technologist and Co-Founder of Green Blue Health Pty Ltd.

"Our expertise is in sustainably produced marine ingredients like seaweed, fish and mussels,” she said. “These ingredients offer unique compounds for animal health, like sulphated polysaccharides only found in ocean environments. We initiated this project in 2019 and began by evaluating various fish sources as the protein base; we landed on herring with a lower environmental footprint than larger species. "

"It has been inspiring to work with Nova Concepts; the bar fits their brand perfectly."

In addition to pet health, Green Blue Health is continually developing feed solutions for Australian farming,” Ms Wilson said.

"When you improve the quality of nutrition and support the immune system, it reduces disease and the need for antibiotics, especially in poultry farming and aquaculture. We formulate with seaweed extracts that have well-established gut health and immunomodulation properties. We have begun applying this science for pet health in both complete feeds and treats.”

Pet parents can now take a convenient snack formulated for their dog's specific exercise recovery and energy needs. It makes perfect sense that both pet and owner can enjoy a nutritious snack at the end of a workout session. "One for you, one for me!"

Dogs jump at the chance to enjoy the protein bar, which was carefully crafted from whole fish.

"The products must be nutritious with good palatability, or pets won't enjoy the benefits. Our in-house taste tester "Roxy" the whippet is extremely particular with what she will eat." She inhaled the protein boost bar," Co-Founder of Green Blue Health Anthony Jacobs said.

The Protein Boost Bar for dogs hit the Australian supermarket shelves late last year.
