Summary of news and initatives from Greater Western Sydney for March 2013.

Packer’s $10M College

JAMES Packer will build a $10 million college in Penrith to train 1250 staff to work in what he claims will be one of the world's greatest hotels - his $1 billion six-star Crown Sydney Hotel Resort at Barangaroo. He has signed a deal with the Penrith's Panthers club that will see the state-of-the-art training facility built within the club's proposed community centre.

Pre-commitments

THE Goodman Group’s pre-commitments, at Eastern Creek, include: a 43,150-square-metre distribution centre for Bunnings, a 20,120-square-metre warehouse and office facility for DHL Supply Chain on behalf of Canon Australia and a 9120-square-metre industrial facility for Bantex Australia.

$115m project on target

WORKS on the $115 million Sydney Wet ‘n’ Wild theme park, on a 25-hectare site, at Prospect is running on schedule with an opening planned for December. The project will generate 300 construction jobs, including more than 30 for Seven Hills firm, Western Earthmoving, and 300 full-time jobs when the park opens. A Village Roadshow spokesman said the park would generate $500 million in economic activity for the local economy.

Call for lighting

SHOPKEEPERS are campaigning for Blacktown’s CBD to be better lit. They claim the area along Main Street is a no-go zone from 6.00pm in winter and 8.00pm in summer due to the poor public lighting and no CCTV.

1000 homes masterplan

THE Landcom master planned Thornton development, on the northern side of the Penrith station – which is 150 years old this year – will include up to 1000 homes offering a range of “21st Century Living” opportunities.

South West Quickstep appointments

CARBON composites manufacturer, Quickstep Holdings Limited has announced the appointment of two experienced and successful industry executives, Tony Quick and Bruce Griffiths, as independent non-executive directors of the company. Mr Quick succeeds Mark Jenkins as chairman of the board. Relocation of centre THE University of Western Sydney’s Urban Research Centre, formerly based in the Parramatta CBD, is now located at the university’s Bankstown campus. The director is Professor Katherine Gibson. Professor Phillip O’Neil was foundation director of the centre.

Warehouse purchased

AUSTRALIAN Xin Feng Group has purchased 34-38 Lisbon Street, Fairfield East for $2.5 million. The warehouse complex has been purchased with vacant possession.

Warehouse leased

ULTIMATE Karting Sydney has leased 3745 square metres of space, at 40- 44 Anderson Road, Smeaton Grange .The warehouse has been leased from Tigari at a net rent of $80 per square metre.

$151 million project

KRIKIS Tayler Architects has lodged a DA for the construction of a 26-storey, mixed-use development containing 419 apartments, a retail tenancy, 702 public carparking spaces and 429 residential parking spaces, at 189 Macquarie Street and part of 34 Hassall Street, Parramatta. Estimated construction cost: $151 million .

Thales relocating

THALES Australia, one of Australia’s largest defence contractors, has commened the relocation of staff to new $10 million Australian headquarters at Sydney Olympic Park The majority of headquarters staff, at Garden Island, will relocate, with some moving to Thales’ existing site at Rydalmere in the company’s global centre for Underwater Systems.

Eels enrol in UNE

THE University of New England’s vice-chancellor, Jim Barber, said the unprecedented deal with the Parramatta Eels has help the institution’s push into Western Sydney, where around 3000 of the university’s distance students are enrolled. Several Eels players enrolled in tertiary studies through UNE’s campus to be opened in Parramatta soon.

Third tower rising

CONSTRUCTION has commenced on the third stage of the 120-metre high Australia Towers, in Sydney Olympic Park. The 30-storey, 300-apartment building is expected to be completed mid-2015. The first tower of 216 units was completed in 2011, with the second of 267 units to be completed late in 2014.

Playground underway

PREPARATORY works have commenced on the construction of an adventure playground on the northern shore of the Parramatta River, between the Barry Wilde Bridge and the Elizabeth Street footbridge, in the CBD. Council, which accepted the tender by Hargraves Landscapes for $538.725 for its construction, will allocate an additional $200,000 from the CBD Infrastructure Special Rate Program.

Transfer of land

THE draft voluntary agreement for the Meriton Apartments project, on the former DJs site, provides for the transfer of 1065 square metres of land adjacent to the Parramatta River foreshore as well as the tiling of a future retaining wall.
