BLITZ ON ILLEGAL DUMPING

Council bid to reduce $800,000 cost

PARRAMATTA City Council will again launch its ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign to drive down the illegal dumping of rubbish in community spaces in a bid to reduce the $800,000 per year cost to ratepayers.

The six-week blitz will be carried out from May 19 to June 27 through illegal dumping hotspots in the Parramatta Local Government area.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr John Chedid, said Council is continually working to make sure that residents can be proud of their street, neighbourhood and City.

“Once more we need the community to get on board and help stop others treating their streets and parks like a rubbish tip, as well as ensuring that those who do the wrong thing are made aware of the offence,” Cr Chedid said.

“Although more people are doing the right thing, illegal dumping still remains a concern for us, costing Council over $800,000 a year.”

“In last year’s blitz there was a 47% increase in catching illegal dumpers with 248 illegal dumping incidents reported and 23 fines and one clean-up notice issued to offenders.”

During the blitz, Council Officers and Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad investigators will patrol every street, every day in illegal dumping hotspot areas.

Where rubbish has been illegally dumped, Council will not only target the offender but, where possible, put the rubbish back onto the offender’s property. Council officers will also inform the neighbours at each illegal dumping incident.

Individuals found guilty of illegally dumping rubbish face fines between $750 and $250,000, and up to 7 years of imprisonment.
