When the inside voice says NO

By Anya Haldey

HOW many times have you stopped yourself from doing things you wanted to do, only to hear that voice in your head –“can’t be done”.

It seems as if there is a block in your way, a veil covering the true face, a deeply buried treasure chest containing the purest desire. How can we bring it to the surface?

Feeling limited and disappointed in life can be quite common in the times preceding a major change.

People often feel frustrated that they are not achieving the success they were dreaming of before and create a crisis in their lives which brings to light the limitations they may have inside their mind.

It is the work of the mind followed by the actions that either liberates us from these limitations or locks us in a box with all too familiar patterns of thinking and behaviour.

These patterns may be traced back to the beliefs adopted very early on, they could be attributed to the lack of confidence (I am not good enough), fear of failure (it will hurt if I fail), fear of success (what am I going to do with all this fame, money, knowledge or whatever it may be), the reasons are as varied as the individuals.

The degree to which someone may be affected by such self imposed limitations can be small or large; often intensifying with time to the point of being unbearable.

That is when you have to make a decision: to resolve it once and for all or to keep living with the inner dissatisfaction, disillusionment, disapproval, and lose the dreams one used to have.

How can we overcome those blockages? Recognising within yourself the negative patterns of thinking and behaviour, accepting responsibility for the past without blaming people or circumstances, and taking action to let go of the limitations can help in straightening the course of your ship in time to avoid the collision and arrive at your chosen destination.

Each one of us has a vast pool of inner resources, knowledge and attributes to achieve the success and live our dreams, and each one of us has our own unique challenges that we need to overcome along the way. These challenges, blocks or limitations are there for a reason – to allow us to grow.

Take James for example. A senior IT executive with an international company, after a few successful career moves he felt stuck in his current role, his motivation was getting weaker and weaker to the point where all he wanted to do was to sit on the couch and not move.

He felt that he had reached a peak in his career and would be overlooked for the next challenging and exciting international project.

The negative thinking affected him so much that he was prepared to seek help and look hard at himself.

During therapy he discovered that the only limitation preventing him from moving ahead was his own belief, and going back to the time of inspiration and finding motivation in the simple acts of his childhood helped him to restore the balance and get the project he desired.

Leanne had a different story. All her life she suffered from a low self esteem, being a quiet person she tried to make everyone around her happy often foregoing her own needs.

She was a hard worker and really liked her job in the real estate achieving great results but it was never enough for her to believe in her own ability. She had low expectations of herself and when she missed out on a well deserved promotion, it only confirmed to her the little worth she perceived she had as a person.

Recognising it as a problem she decided to change her life. She uncovered many blocks and limiting beliefs acquired very early on. Learning to let go and to take responsibility for the events in her life has allowed her to start claiming back her power.

For the first time she realised what a vast pool of resources she had inside. Once discovered she started using them in the professional area and then other areas of her life.

Within a very short period of time she enrolled into a university course partly sponsored by her work, moved to a different role, became involved in the social club and started to feel excited about the possibilities in the future.

Realising one’s own success does not mean that you become a star overnight. What it means is that once you shift the focus from blaming the circumstances or other people for your misfortunes, and accept the choices that you have made; you feel empowered and more discerning when it comes to the decision making in any area of your life.

That’s when all of a sudden things start to turn around and crafting your own path flows naturally and becomes a joy.
